NHBC Helpline & Competition Kingdom Unite for Hereditary Breast Cancer Awareness

The National Hereditary Breast Cancer Helpline, established in 1996 by Wendy Watson (MBE), offers vital support and information to individuals facing hereditary breast cancer risks. With a mission to ensure everyone has access to comprehensive information and unwavering support, the helpline operates seven days a week from 9AM to 3AM.

Supported by esteemed medical professionals like Professor Gareth Evans and Hon Professor Julian Barwell, the helpline strives to maintain awareness of familial risks and preserve available options for all. Despite their efforts, 97% of individuals carrying gene faults remain unaware, making partnerships like ours crucial in reducing these numbers. Through collaborations such as Wendy’s World – The Musical, we aim to raise awareness, save lives, and safeguard future generations.

Breast Cancer Awareness and Hereditary Risk

Breast cancer can be hereditary, meaning it runs in families due to gene mutations like BRCA1 and BRCA2. Shockingly, 97% of those with these high-risk genes are unaware of their status.

Traditionally, only BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes were tested. However, many with a family history tested negative. To address this, panel tests were introduced in 2018, checking for multiple gene mutations. Unfortunately, many aren’t informed about these tests by genetic services or GPs, emphasizing the importance of media and outreach efforts like ours.

Bullseye Insights: Hitting the Mark on Breast Cancer Genetics

Did you know? Breast cancer can be hereditary, with 1 in 501 individuals carrying a BRCA mutation. There are 180* different genes involved, and startlingly, 20% of familial breast cancer cases are attributed to single genes. Moreover, 50% of female BRCA carriers will develop breast cancer by the age of 50. Knowledge is key – let’s spread awareness together!

*As of 2024, research has identified nearly double the amount of genes involved in hereditary breast cancer compared to figures published in 2017.
